5.0 out of 5 stars: A "beautiful, perfect" exploration of human resilience.
Samuel Kygan’s Starting to Quit is a profound meditation on the anatomy of ending things. While many self-help books focus on the "how-to" of new habits, Kygan turns his lens toward the messy...

Welcome to one of the last unexplored territories on earth... Yourself.
DEAR PLEASURE,
What are you, that you've been so long my passion?
Who are you, to have stolen so much of my time?
Do you have hands, heart, and mind,
As someone who might give a damn?
Or are you what you take me for?
Available to anyone, anytime.
I have given you all that I am;
Even all I aspired to be.
But you have given me nothing;
Save the lesser side of me.
Yet once more I'm at your disposal,
Expecting something in return.
As usual, you'll deliver nothing,
Which is more than you ever earn.
How can I stand you any longer!
Knowing you as well as I do?
The destruction you wield has no equal;
There's nothing less pleasing than you.
And still I fall morbidly attracted;
To the temporal thrills you provide.
Your promises of life and fulfillment,
Have failed me... I'm dying inside.
Now before I'm officially buried;
And yet, just a little alive,
I've just enough strength to escape you.
There's only one way to survive.
This is good-bye. It's over.
Pleasure, you're not worth the pain.
It's time for you to be buried,
In the grave where I would have lain.
May God revive what's left of me.
From your way of life I depart.
From now on, I'll make God my pleasure...!
He'll give me the desires of my heart!

BACK ATTACK
Your vicious attacks are not hidden,
Though launched behind my back.
It couldn't have hurt me more...
Had you lodged a frontal attack.
I'd have been much better off,
Had you said what you did to my face.
And privately expressed your "concerns".
Now... rumors are all over the place.
It's hard to know how to fix it.
Tell me, how far did you go?
What did you say? Who did you tell?
How much do they "think" they know?!
The damage is done at any rate.
There's not much I can do.
So until what's gone around, comes around...
Here is some advice for you.
Next time you're tempted to gossip,
Don't be a part of the hack.
If you wouldn't say it to someone's face,
Don't say it behind their back!

Sackin' groceries,
Buffin' floors,
And washin' dishes
Have been my chores.
Refrigeration,
Cuttin' timber,
And Sellin' cars,
I well remember.
I traveled with the carnival.
I've been a mental health aide.
There is no work
Of which I'm afraid.
I've served in the Navy.
I've bagged insulation.
I worked in a freezer,
And at a gas station.
I'm a lumber inspector,
And a therapist too.
When there's work to be done,
I know what to do.
I've renovated houses,
Sold ceiling fans,
I've worked as a cook
And a survival equipment man.
I'm an educated man
And I've earned my degrees
From the school of hard knocks
And the universities.
What am I doin' now?
Something I've never done.
I'm workin' for you... dear reader;
And we've only just begun.
